BOURBON ON BURGUNDY
The historic renovation project at 1928 Burgundy St. in New Orlean is a Creole cottage, originally built in the 1850s, presented a unique design challenge due to its traditional square plan and historical guidelines.
Our goal was to maximize the living space while preserving the cottage's historic character. We achieved this by opening up the front parlor to both the kitchen and the rear parlor. This transformation created a spacious front living area, affectionately named the "booze lounge," which now beautifully showcases the owner's extensive bourbon collection. The design of the shelving was based on the shelvingisslustrated by Fronasetti in Cole & Son's wallpaper installed on the ceiling.
The lounge flows seamlessly into an open, galley-style kitchen. This functional space features cabinets on either side and a narrow, pill-shaped island that enhances the open feel. Beyond the kitchen is the dining area, furnished with a custom-fabricated dining table, chairs, and a bench, all designed and crafted locally in New Orleans.
On the right side of the floor plan, the primary bedroom and its attached bathroom were reconfigured to optimize space for both the bathroom and closets. The bathroom is a beautiful and cozy retreat, featuring tile, wallpaper, and a Terrazzo shower surround, complemented by a furniture-style vanity. The primary bedroom continues this inviting atmosphere with walls painted in a deep Reddish Brown by Farrow & Ball, creating a cozy, cocoon-like feel, further enhanced by velvet window treatments and bedding.
The overall effect of this renovation is a warm, welcoming, and surprisingly spacious Creole cottage that expertly utilizes every inch of its historic floor plan.
This project won the ASID GOLD- Best Small Residential Renovation Award, South Central Chapter, 2026.
